I have to admit that I am a little unsure of exactly where I stand on this issue. I am not a great supporter of big government, especially when that government intrudes on the private lives of its citizens. In case you haven’t noticed, this site, like many others, has nearly drifted into non-existence. Luckily, we have a great friend to keep it going while we work out our hectic lives. Thank you, David. Quick update. I am working toward an M.A. while being a T.A. Add the whole single dad thing to that, and I have quite the load. Brian has been pretty busy himself. Farewell, Christopher Hitchens
Today, we lost one of the greats. Christopher Hitchens passed away after a long battle with cancer. The natural world can be an incredibly sad place–robbing us of life far before “our time.” We do not know what the Christian World will think. Will they be happy, indifferent, critical? I really hate politics. Talking about it, hearing about it; there are a lot of unpleasant things I would do before sitting through a conversation or news piece discussing the subject. Joseph Vincent “Joe” Paterno announced today that he would be retiring early as Head Coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions football team due to a scandal involving one of his former employees. Earlier this month, former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was arrested and charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse on 8 boys over the last 15 years. While Jerry Sandusky will have to account for his actions, the problem for his former boss, Joe Paterno, is that at least one of these abuses occurred in the Penn State football teams shower facilities. Our story continues. Isaac and Rebekah are married, but unfortunately she is sterile. This seems to happen a lot in the Bible, first Sarah, now Rebekah. Jacob, being his father’s son, asks God to make her fertile. His prayer is granted, and Rebekah becomes pregnant. To see the rough spots here, let’s view this from the traditional born-again perspective. In this POV nothing happens without God’s will, so it follows that Yahweh wanted her sterile. Until God is begged, and what else is a prayer but begging a superior being for favors, Rebekah remains infertile. Now why would he do this? Rebekah and Isaac, Love Bought and Paid For.
In spite of my mocking post title above, this is the most humane story of the Bible so far. There is no genocide, no enslavement of grandsons, no selfish God with unreasonable demands. There is a marriage arrangement with the bride-to-be’s parents, but there’s also the first biblical instance where there is a small amount of respect for a woman’s desires. The story of Rebekah and Isaac, at least in the beginning, is a gentler story. Even though, I am circumcised and on the advice of our pediatrician, our son has also been snipped, I just don’t understand the entirety of circumcision. Although, Medical opinion still seems validate the practice, it still puzzles me. My questions is this: who actually figured this out 4000 years ago?
