Ask an Atheist — Is it bad?
The person who asked this question has asked to remain anonymous. I’ve recently (meaning last 7 months or so) gained a very powerful, angry disgust for religion. It gets stronger by the month it seems and it’s led to more than one former friend becoming distanced. I get frustrated at the absolute lack of critical thinking. All the hypocrisy of it all. The shortsightedness, the blind belief, the lack of understanding of content in holy books. It gets under my skin more than anything else. And in society’s eyes, I’m becoming a sort of antagonist for it. But that doesn’t stop me. I don’t care if I’m “that” guy, I want to make my distaste…
A letter from Hannah — Burn on us…we guess
Hello, I am writing as an evangelical Christian (not a creationist…there is a difference, and if you’d like further elaboration let me know) who is currently studying at Cambridge (all the way from England…I’m assuming you’re all American?) Anyway. I have a rather general question to pose. I do quite a lot of research on both sides of the equation- as in the Christian and Atheist sides, and I would like to humbly suggest that there is quite a lot of ignorance and hostility in both parties. One of the major problems I have with atheistic arguments is that a lot of them are based on a misunderstanding of Christianity. I confess that this is…
Atheist vs. Christian Murderer
As I was searching for info for an article, I came across this post on christianpost.com. It’s almost two years old, but it seems pretty appropriate considering the recent Norway shooting. I found the article to be a total denial of the facts. After all, Stalin gets shoved down the throat of atheists constantly. Let us know what you think. Here’s the article. Let us know what you think. Scenario A: Alex the Christian Murderer Alex is a Christian active in his church, a deacon and Sunday school teacher. One day Alex comes to hold the belief that God wants him to kill his wife, and so he strangles her and then flees the city….
Ask an Atheist — Little Help Please
From Tatiana Gavela: hey i need help on my essay for school. my topic is in a cause and effect format. religion causes war, false hope, and takes away people’s common sense. I narrowed it down to Christianity as the chosen religion. Also are there any reliable websites to source from relating to my topic? I was hoping you would help me out by stating valid points on lack of common sense. Thank you!!! Spread the word:ShareDiggEmailPrint
What exactly does Atheism have to offer?
From jasperwall: Hi all. I’m a Christian and I am as proud as you are being an Atheist. But let’s say we know each other and you wish for me to turn from Christianity and become an Atheist. How would you do that? What are the “perks”, priviledges, entitlements you have as an Atheist? What does Atheism mean in your life and how does it govern your lifestyle? I appreciate your considerate, serious, and respectful response. Spread the word:ShareDiggEmailPrint
Ask an Atheist
Hi, I am an agnostic. I have a few concerns and I need your opinion. When considering the ultimate question of existence it seems that is faced with two option. 1. Infinite regress, which seems wrong because then we would not have reached the present and whatever could happen would have happened by now. 2. The other option is to accept something as necessary ( uncaused). Now it seems that the concept of necessary being is a self-contradictory but I was listening to Dr.Paul Davies and he thinks that we have to believe in something necessary, something as given. Either we take the laws of nature as necessary or God as necessary. Dr. Stephan Hawking…
Why am I such a misfit?
Ok, my last entry was meant to be funny. This one is serious. Am I seriously such a horrible person? I was disowned by some family members for being an atheist. My mom called me a disappointment to my face because I became a vegetarian. (One of the fine editors here also, I believe, after a comment made Facebook last night, cares not for me for the same reason.) So, yeah, I’m hated by religious people for not believing in anything, I’m hated by meat eaters for being a vegetarian, I’m hated by vegans because I still willingly consume dairy products and eggs and for some reason, I’m hated by this little girl in my…
Ask an Atheist — I am a rock…I am an island.
I am an atheist. I am a proud atheist. Sadly, I have had someone in my world disown me for this. I was adopted and raised by my biological mother and adopted father. Up until a year-and-a-half ago, I knew almost nothing about the other half of my life. Because of social networking sites (see Facebook), I was found by my cousin. Of course, she had to tell me all the horrible things–mainly that she, her father and I are the only remaining family living here in the US. (Our family is from Poland. That would explain why I’m pale, blue-eyed and overly wonderful looking! And very smart! LOL!!) Well, I wish I could say…

Atheism means ‘being rational’.
Recently, on our column ‘Ask an atheist‘, there were questions asking if anyone can be moral without God. There were enlightening comments. One common observation seems that we are social animals, morality is a learned behavior. We thus may not need god to be good human beings. Also, there was a question if we can be good without god; and Nate answered, ‘we are good because we see value in it’. As Nate rightly pointed out, it is a pragmatic approach. There is something we need to realize here. Whenever questions about deep beliefs surface, there is a cultural gene attached to it. Thus as a defense mechanism, we try and learn more to protect…
