Campaign Trail of Tears

vote

I really hate politics. Talking about it, hearing about it; there are a lot of unpleasant things I would do before sitting through a conversation or news piece discussing the subject. If I was a bit more informed, things could be different, but I highly doubt it. I don’t identify with any party, and for the foreseeable future, I won’t be registering with one. It is interesting how sensitive people are about these things. Concerning the upcoming presidential election, I will not be voting. I didn’t vote in the last one either. And don’t say I can’t complain because I didn’t vote; I can and I will. Although I won’t be looking for a ballot any…

Trained Monkeys

Trained Monkey's

A friend of mine posted an interesting illustration up on his Facebook account this morning. I’m really glad that he did, because it gets straight to a fundamental issue: why is it taboo in our society to criticize religion? The illustration shows an actual experiment that scientists had conducted on a group of monkeys. In the test they punish a population of monkeys for attempting to reach a banana on top of a ladder. Once the monkeys have been trained not to climb the ladder, the scientists systematically replaced every monkey, one by one, until none of the original punished monkeys were left in the population. The group knowledge, or paradigm, that climbing the ladder…

Herman Cain, Jesus, and the Perspective of History

herman cain

Last week, Lawrence O’Donnell interviewed GOP presidential contender Herman Cain on his MSNBC show “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell”. In that interview, Herman Cain was asked if he regretted “sitting on the sidelines” during the civil rights movement of the 60’s. The Republican presidential contender responded predictably… by lying. He stated that he was in high school at the time and that it was college kids that did the protesting. When Lawrence O’Donnell pointed out that Mr. Cain was in fact in college during the peak of the movement, was attending Morehouse College in Atlanta (the same college Martin Luther King went to), and that Mr. Cain had written in his book that he…

5 Bullshit Claims About the Bible

circular-reasoning-works-because-150x150

I heard another hysterical pile of garbage today on American Family Radio. This time, it came from the lips of Dr. Alex McFarland, a Christian apologist. McFarland made the following claims which anyone with a secular brain cell can say is absolute bullshit. 1. The Bible is scientifically accurate. I think a number of scientists would disagree with this bullshit claim. Let’s start at the beginning–the very beginning. The Bible lists the order of creation events: beginning earth in darkness enshrouded in heavy gases and water light atmosphere large areas of dry land land plants sun, moon, and stars seen in the night sky; seasons sea monsters and flying creatures wild and tame beasts man Then…

The Delusional Statements of the New Age Movement

new age

“A delusion is a false belief held with absolute conviction despite superior evidence.” – Wikipedia A few days ago I wrote an article entitled “What Does it Mean When Someone Thanks God?” This article is a critique of the delusional statements made on a daily basis by the religious. I had listed a few of the religious comments I found that day on my Facebook News Feed and discussed the importance of challenging such statements. Now to be perfectly fair, the religious are not the only ones proudly posting delusional statements up on their Facebook pages. Being from California, I see more than my fair share of New Age rhetoric being brandied about and many…

What Does it Mean When Someone Thanks God?

thank god

This morning when I checked my Facebook account, I saw that several of my friends were thanking God for some reason or the other. By looking through only about half of the first page of this morning news feed, I have several friends that are “blessed by God”, another friend is thanking the lord for one more day of living, at least two people are passing a message that God is going to do great things for you tonight if you just forward the message on to 10 more people, and one is “overwhelmed by God’s goodness!!” As an active Atheist, you can imagine that many of my friends are also non-believers, and as such…

What Would Jesus NOT Do?: A Review

non stamp collector

One of my all-time favorite YouTube videos is an 8+ minute presentation by an Australian named “NonStampCollector”. I don’t know much about NonStampCollector, beyond his brilliant collection of videos. His YouTube channel boasts well over 50 video’s all of which deal with Atheism at some level. I can’t say I have watched all of his collection, but this one in particular is really one of the best I have ever seen. The following is a simple review of the content found in the video “What Would Jesus NOT Do?”, which I think presents an interesting point of view that every Atheist should know. The cartoon-like video starts with Jesus summoning his Angels around a conference…
